FUSION BONDED EPOXY PIPE COATING: PREPARATION AND APPLICATION MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE
Recent years have seen a rapid accumulation of field experience with fusion bonded epoxy (FBE) as a pipeline coating. Field experience and research indicate that the superior performance of FBE coating depends substantially on application over a clean steel surface. Increased control of the uniformity and cleanliness of the abraded steel substrate is necessary to achieve the maximum performance potential of the coating. This article describes processes to identify potential problems that could hinder coating performance, and current practices to remove nonvisible contamination from pipe surfaces. A brief history is also given of a 5-year-year field trial investigation made prior to the acceptance of the FBE as an approved pipeline coating. It is noted that conventional grit blast cleaning is not designed to remove ionic contamination. Blast-cleaned steel pipes showed improved adhesion and resistance to cathodic disbondment after they were chemically treated with a 5% by weight phosphoric acid rinsed by medium pressure deminerlized water.
