FURTHER CONTRIBUTIONS TO RELIABILITY-BASED PILE-SETTLEMENT ANALYSIS
This paper presents some practical considerations in the estimation of the statistics of the Young's modulus of the soil including the incorporation of model uncertainty, and illustrates the validity of the design obtained from first-order analysis by presenting the results of second-order anlysis. The paper also illustrates, through a numerical example, how the design charts presented in an earlier paper, Phoon (1990), can be used to include the uncertainty in the correlation model for the Young's modulus of the soil, in which the correlation parameter is treated as a random variable, in addition to the basic soil property which is modeled as a random field.
