UPDATE ON THE SHRP ASPHALT PROGRAM: INFORMATION FROM THE JANUARY 1992 TRB MEETING
Report presenting a picture of the likely outputs of the U.S. Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) work on bitumen and asphalt. The main product will be a bitumen and asphalt specification and mix design package, named SUPERPAVE which is scheduled to be ready in September 1992. The package consists of a binder specification, an asphalt mix specification, a mix design procedure, and the associated test equipment. Information is presented on the likely pieces of test equipment to be selected and on how the mix design procedure will operate. Implementation is being given high priority and the techniques to be used are mentioned. Aspects of the SHRP program will continue after its completion in March 1993 and details of arrangements to transfer future work to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) are given. Mention is made of the high cost of the test equipment and whether investment of this order would be justified in Australia.
