EQUATIONS FOR COMPRESSION INDEX APPROXIMATION
In this study, a linear relationship between equilibrium void ratio and liquid limit for a constant pressure was observed for the clay sediment data reported by Lambe and Whitman (1969). These data imply that liquid-limit-related factors have a signficant effect on volume-change behavior for clay seidments and that liquid limits can be a parameter in settlement calculations. An analysis of the clay sediment data permits derivation of an expression that considers both liquid limit and increase in pressure for computation of equilibrium void ratios and settlement. It is concluded that published equations for compression index approximations show considerable inconsistencies. The differences are directly atrributable to the nature of the data used in the development of empirical relationships.
