A LOOK AT WHAT SOME STATES ARE DOING. MICHIGAN GIVES THUMBS UP TO BRIDGE PAINTING WARRANTIES
This note describes Michigan Department of Transportation's requirement of warranties on bridge painting jobs. M-DOT is trying it on 17 jobs, requiring contractors to guarantee their work against rust or other deterioration for at least 2 years. Warranties on two jobs 2 years ago resulted in higher quality performance. Contractors took special care to make sure the bridge steel was clear of dirt, blemishes, and peeling before painting began, that all rust was removed, and that every crack and crevice received a good covering of paint. Contract warranties also reduce the costs of administration, inspection, and other standard oversight efforts.
