SOURCE CONTROL OF INTRUSIONS ALONG HORIZONTAL BOUNDARY
The front of air intrusions into a water-filled duct in a frame of reference moving with the front was analyzed by Benjamin (1968). The solutions for the front velocity were derived by assuming that the interface far in the lee of the front is horizontal in the absence of boundary shear. The interface can remain horizontal when rarefactions and small jumps travel either towards the front or towards the source of the intrusion. The study shows that such disturbances are reomved from the interface of slender air cavities when the flow below the cavity is subcritical. The study also determined the conditions under which hydraulic jumps of finite amplitude are expelled from the duct, or submerged. The requirements for the interface of intrusions of a liquid into another one are also discussed. The details of the study are described and the results are discussed.
