INFLUENCE OF CUT-OUTS ON THE BUCKLING OF FLAT PLATES
For the project of the Swedish Ship Research Foundation to investigate the effect of some types of holes on the buckling strength of plates, Kockums Mekaniska Verkstads AB has carried out buckling experiments on plastic models. Rectangular plates with oval holes have been forced to buckling, at pure shear load and pure axial compressive load. Furthermore buckling experiments have been carried out on a model of a structure of ship at combined load. An attempt is also made to find a method of calculation, applicable to naval architects, to carry out buckling calculations at combined load with consideration to the effect of the holes. The effect of the hole at pure bending is not known, and there is also a lack of a hypothesis of buckling that takes into consideration all three types of loads.
