PROVING OUT POLLUTION CLEAN UP
The EPA built an oil and hazardous materials simulated environmental test tank (OHMSETT) in Leonardo, New Jersey. The testing tank (667x65x11 ft) is spanned by a rail-mounted bridge fitted with oil tanks and equipment to spread a slick. A bubbler system prevents oil from reaching tank walls saving clean up expense and time between test runs, and a filtering system maintains water clarity by removing living organisms and suspended sediments. OHMSETT can produce wave ht up to 2 1/2 ft, wave lengths to 100 ft, relative water currents up to 6 kn, and duplicate conditions found in a tidal inlet with heavy boat traffic. Oil cleanup equipment can be tested and compared in controlled conditions without danger of polluting the environment. To save money, a large part of the test facility's auxillary equipment came from other federal government agencies, and virtually all test materials are recycled. OHMSETT's 1st test compared 2 oil skimming devices for the USCG. The extent and accuracy of the test data were impressive.
