PROGRAMMED CHANGE FOR LIGHT SOURCES AND GEAR
The greater Manchester county council have begun replacing 47000 old and inefficient tungsten and mercury vapour street light sources with newer more efficient low pressure sodium vapour lamps. It is estimated that there will be a 14 per cent annual return on the initial cost of found1.1M; tungsten lighting is being converted first to produce maximum savings. The lamps involved were the responsibility of 67 former lighting authorities and the configurations used varied considerably. Lantern fixings are being standardised on replacement lamps, control gear is placed in the canopy for mounting heights up to 6M. Higher columns have the control gear installed in the column base compartment. The control system selected after trials was of a low energy loss incorporating choke ballast with ignitor starter. The programme when completed in 1976 will reduce the load from 6,000 kw to 2,800 kw, increasing the amount of light provided by 33 per cent. /TRRL/
