NHTSA PROPOSES REFLECTIVE MARKINGS
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking designed to help prevent passenger cars from striking and perhaps underriding trailers on dark roads. NHTSA proposes to require a conspicuous array of reflectors or reflective tapes on the sides and rear of 1993-model dump, flatbed, tank and van trailers over 10,000-lb GVWR and having a width of at least 80 inches. NHTSA suggests marking a trailer's sides and rear with a continuous strip of 2-inch-wide, red-and-white-block-pattern reflective tape. Other bars of white reflective tapes are also required, as well as markings that would highlght the top corners of the sides and rear.
