STRIP SOLUTION CLEARS DESERT ROADS
Brief details are given of field trials carried out in Portugal of a method to protect desert highways from encroachment by sand. As a result of stabilising strips of sand parallel to the roadway the problem is solved aerodynamically by accelerating the sand over the road surface. The stabilisation is achieved by binding together the top layer of soil with a permeable rubber latex membrane, the depth of penetration being about 4 cm. To obtain this depth of penetration in desert areas economically, a machine called a unilayer has been evolved, drawn by a tracked tractor equipped with a hydraulic ripper bar. The machine simultaneously creates a uniform, flat, compacted surface and injects the bonding liquid under pressure. /TRRL/
