SUPER STREETS WIN POINTS IN ORANGE COUNTY
The note describes a comprehensive implementation of a range of improvements across jurisdictional lines in Orange County, California. The improvements include traffic signal coordination, intersection widening, on-street parking modifications, roadway restriping and bus turnouts. Called super streets, it is seen as a solution to increased traffic demands on exisitng roadways and decreased opportunities to expand freeways. In Orange County, 21 county arterials, a total of 220 miles, have been identified as potential super streets in a study. The study developed conceptual engineering plans, an environmental checklist, an economic analysis, and a phasing plan to develop a high-flow arterial. Other details of the study are noted.
