ELASTOMERIC BEARINGS: AN OVERVIEW
This article provides an overview of the use of elastomers in bearing technolgy, and outlines the relative importance of different issues in design and fabrication. Structural bearings versus pads for buildings is discussed, as well as stresses and strains in the bearing. Material properties and durability are covered, as well as other responses of bearings. It is noted that many different types of elastomeric bearing are available, and that there have been significant changes to the AASHTO specifications for bridge bearings. Bearing design, choice of material, and quality control during manufacture and installation all are important. Reinforced bearing design must take into account the mechanics appropriate for a composite made of materials with unusual and widely disparate properties. Comments are also made on the quality of control of materials.
