FIRST IN CONCRETE AND CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION

An attempt is made to set down a record of some of the historical firsts involving concrete. One hundred and twenty one developments are listed alphabetically in a table which includes information on the date of the application, the agency, project or place of development, and whether it is thought to be a first in the World, America, or the U.S. Thus the dense-surface-making absorptive form lining developed in 1940 for the Friant Dam, California was the first of its kind in America, and the arch of 612 feet with hollow-section ribs developed in France in 1930, was the first of its kind in the world. The table covers developments from 27 B.C. (concrete from hydraulic cement was used to build baths in Rome) to 1974 (the use of Econocrete in two 1-77 ramps near Fort Mill, South Carolina).
