SHRINKAGE-COMPENSATING CEMENT CONCRETE

To obtain full benefit from the properties of shrinkage compensating cements, certain guidelines should be followed in placing, finishing and curing concretes made with these cements. In placing, the subgrade should be wetted thoroughly and a 1 to 3 in. (25 to 75 mm) layer of prewetted sand placed over the vapor barrier. The minimum reinforcement is 0.15 percent, which should be positioned at about 1/3 the thickness of the slab and given adequate cover. Delays in discharging from transit mixers must be avoided. The abscence of bleed water after screeding and floating does not indicate an early start for finishing operations. Finishing should be delayed until slabs are firm enough to support the finishers' weight. To maintain a high relative humidity, fog sprays or covering with waterproof sheeting is recommended. Usual curing methods are satisfactory, but those such as ponding, continuous sprinkling or enclosing with wet coverings are preferred. The minimum curing time is seven days. /HRIS/
