STRUCTURAL PLASTICS MOVE TO FRONT BURNER
Two new glass reinforced molding compounds, HMC and XMC (which represent an improvement of the widely used thermoset polyester based, glass reinforced sheet molding compoind - SMC) will soon be used for parts never before considered for reinforced plastics. XMC may be tailored to particular requirements, and it is likely that a part may consist of 10 to 20 percent by part weight of HMC. High modulus HMC consists of 65 to 70 percent chopped fiberglass rovings and about 35 percent thickened polyester; filler materials are completely absent. Properties of XMC-2 using 70 percent glass, run 86,000 psi in tensile strength and 5.8 million psi flex modulus. Parts now made of metal and which could be replaced by XMC and HMC are, bumper reinforcement bars, crossframe members, transmission supports, and perhaps spring wheels and other frame members. Weight savings founded on retrofit performance have also been announced.
