ROADS DOWN UNDER

Australia's total road length is 870,000 km, giving its citizens almost ten times the length of inter-city and rural road per head than the U.K. The combined effects of a small, dispersed population and vast distances have added substantially to the difficulty of achieving a road network of the required standard.
