DEVELOPMENTS IN PETRAL-ELECTRIC HYBRID CAR DESIGN? IN CONBINED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION AND RETARDED FOR BUSES AND COACHES? AND A "FALL-SAFE" BRAKE CYLINDER
Brief details are given of three recent developments in automotive design from Germany. The first by Bosch, is a hybrid transmission combining an internal combustion engine and electric generator. The system consists of an an engine with a clutch and a flanged-on electric motor. Whilst driving downhill or at constant speed the electric motor acts as a generator, but when more output is required as in climbing a steep hill then the electric motor assists the internal combustion engine. In city traffic, the vehicle uses electric drive only. Below idling speed of the petrol engine, the clutch is disengaged and the i.e. engine stops thus preventing emissions in stop-and-go traffic. The second development, by the Veith group, is a combined automatic transmission and retarder. The turbine of the torque converter turns in the opposite direction to the impeller enabling the torque converter to act as a retarder by locking the impeller by the initial depression of the brake pedal. Mechanical brakes are brought into operation by depressing the brake pedal further. The third development is a twin circuit braking system, developed by Alfred Teves. The system consists of two cylinders of different diameter but concetric bore. The operation of the cylinder under normal conditions, and failure of one circuit is shown diagrammatically. /TRRL/
