FATIGUE OF BOND
The paper presents results of an experimental study of bond fatigue. The data provide information applicable to the behavior of reinforcing bars embedded in concrete subjected to repeated or earthquake loads. Bond damage accumulates by increase in slip, but not linearly as predicted by the Palmgren-hypothesis. The slip rate tends to decrease initially, then remains constant, and increases rapidly before pullout failure occurs. Under reversed cyclic loading, damage accumulates faster, and bond strength is reduced as is the related slip. A fatigue failure criterion based on the slip at which bond strength is reached under repeated loading is proposed.
