INTEGRATION OF ENGINEERING, DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION
A multidisciplinary research in the integration of 3-dimensional computer models in the construction process is being conducted by the Center for Infrastructure Studies in the School of Engineering at Columbia University and Stone & Webster Engineering Corporation. The research could lead to the significant improvement of productivity of the construction industry. This computer technology can revolutionize the methods used by the construction industry: material quantities are immediately available from the computer; the constructibility of the design is tested before construction; the project can first be built on the computer screen; trades may be coordinated visually; and progress is reported graphically. Use of this computer technology is being investigated in the construction of the Center for Engineering and Physical Science Research at Columbia.
