SOME HAZMAT FACTS
The article discusses a Federal Highway Administration report, 'Present Practices of Highway Transportation of Hazardous Materials'. The research reported in the report attempts to analyze existing exposure, accident, incident, and risk data pertaining to highway transportation of hazardous materials, and to synthesize knowledge and practices related to highway safety, design, traffic operation, and incident management relating to hazardous materials shipments. The study also attempts to identify research needed to develop potential new countermeasures and improvements in existing techniques and procedures with regard to hazardous materials problems, which, at the national level are the responsibility of the FHWA. Some of the data presented in the report is also presented here.
