The efficiency of gritting materials and that of deicing salts is compared; the former can be more economical if used on lightly-trafficked roads and even more effective depending on the temperature of the surfacing, the presence of snow or black ice, etc. The latter are more effective and economical for heavily-trafficked roads. Grit offers immediate adhesion while deicing salts are effective 5 to 20 minutes following spreading. Mention is made of the use of snow ploughs or devices fitted at the front of vehicles. The spreading of products must be automatically carried out, and, when those products are deicing salts, they must be spread only on the centre of the carriageway. Salt grains must differ in size, 75% of the weight being between 1 and 4 mm. When the temperature falls below minus 6 degrees centigrade, it is advisable to use a mixture of clna and cl2ca. Attention is drawn to the harmful effects of salts if the latter are used in large quantities. /TRRL/
