ASPHALT MIXTURE. SHRP INTRODUCES NEW MIXTURE SPECIFICATION
The Strategic Highway Research Program's performance based asphalt mixture specification (will be released in September 1992) will enable highway agencies to specify asphalt mixes that are resistant to failure mechanisms and will yield strong pavements unlikely to crack, rut, or form potholes. To make the specification easier for highway agencies to use, SHRP is developing a computer program that will provide specification criteria tailored to each failure mode, based on traffic level and location. The specification will help in the selection of materials that will meet specific traffic and climate demands. The specification grades mixtures on the basis of the following: a measure of the expected annual precipitation level at the pavement site; the highest mean monthly temperature and lowest expected temperature; and the anticipated traffic level over the pavement's service life.
