LABORATORY TEST FOR EVALUATING ALLOYS FOR HYDROGEN SULFIDE SERVICE
Accelerated tensile stress tests of materials suitable for petroleum production under hydrogen sulfide conditions approximating a procedure under development by NACE Unit Committee T-1F-9 are described. Welded carbon steel coupons in the range 137 to 200 HBN blistered and failed at less than 43% of designated yield strength (YS), mainly in nonwelded zones, by blistering. Tubular specimens used to approximate hydrogen absorption under field conditions failed with respect to interrelations of wall thickness, stress, time, and method of hydrogen charging. Low alloy steels (AISI 4130 and others; N-80 tubing; low alloy NiCrMo) were tested at 228 to 269 HBN at 95% YS. AISI 410, Carpenter 450, and ASTM A-351 Grade CA6-NM stress cracked at 24 to 67% YS. However, in service AISI 410 at less than HRC 22 performs well. Alloy steels with less than 1% Ni indicated limits of 85% YS. Inconel X-750, Uranus 50, MP 35N, Nimonic 105 did not fail at 100% YS. /Author/
