ARE SPEEDING OFFENDERS ALWAYS DRIVING TOO FAST? . SWEDISH ROAD AND TRAFFIC RESEARCH INSTITUTE AND SWEDISH TRANSPORT RESEARCH BOARD, SEMINAR HELD IN LINKOEPING, 1990-01-10--11

AER FORKOERARE ALLTID FORTKOERARE?

A simple way to study drivers' behaviour is speed measurements. But in order to generalize a behaviour it is important to know the stability of that behaviour. The question is whether some drivers always exceed the speed limit or if everyone does it sometimes. This paper accounts for speed measurements of the same cars at two different locations. Measurements were carried out with video cameras. The distance between the locations were 3.5 kilometres. Some of the drivers were stopped and asked to make an assessment of their own speed. When measuring the same vehicle at two locations a correlation of .70 to .75 was found. When looking at the self assessed and the measured speed a correlation of .45 was found. A prediction from a measured speed gives a confidence interval of 95 percent for a 20 to 30 kilometres per hour variation around the measured speed. This means that generalization is not possible without some correction. (TRRL )
