BEHAVIOUR DURING CONSTRUCTION OF A PROPPED DIAPHRAGM WALL IN STIFF CLAY AT THE A406/A10 JUNCTION
This report gives the results from a field study to monitor the behaviour of a counterforted diaphragm retaining wall founded in overconsolidated clay during the immediately after its construction as part of the A406 North Circular Road, Great Cambridge Road Junction Improvement Scheme in North London. The construction sequence involved excavation under bentonite for each T-shaped diaphragm wall panel using a mechanical grab operating between concrete guide walls. After casting of the reinforced concrete wall panels, temporary props were installed which spanned the underpass. Bulk excavation then took place below the temporary props prior to the casting of a permanent prop slab below the final carriageway level. During installation of the wall and construction of the underpass, measurements were taken of ground movements, total lateral stresses and porewater pressures. The wall itself was instrumented to monitor the development of lateral movements and bending moments during underpass construction.
