PARKINFO - A CBD PARKING INFORMATION SYSTEM. ADELAIDE CITY; 2ND AUSTRALIAN PARKING CONVENTION, SEPTEMBER 30 - OCTOBER 4, 1990, ADELAIDE FESTIVAL CENTRE, SOUTH AUSTRALIA; PROVIDING PARKING FOR THE PEOPLE

The planning and management of parking facilities within city centres is one of the most challenging tasks facing Planners and Traffic Engineers. Information relating to a wide range of components in a city's transport and land use systems must be processed, analyzed and effectively communicated to policy makers and concerned groups. These tasks are not easily performed using traditional manual methods due to the spatial nature of the data and the large number of interactions present. This paper presents an integrated graphical database called PARKINFO developed to assist the evaluation and management of parking schemes within an urban centre. It combines parking, traffic and land use data and allows powerful interrogation of these data to be interactively performed with the results presented dynamically in map or tabulated report form. Information on parking facilities includes: location, level of service and physical attributes, combined with numerous performance measures. The geometric layout and utilization profile are stored as graphical images for each parking facility in the system. Detailed maps and reports can be quickly produced, allowing for easier evaluation and examination of the impacts of various development, traffic and parking policies to be effectively communicated to policy makers. These features are illustrated using the Wollongong CBD. The PARKINFO system has substantially aided the evaluation of development proposals and enabled the efficient planning and management of parking facilities within the CBD. (Author/TRRL)
