BRIDGE RAIL DELINEATION
Illuminating a narrow highway bridge to aid drivers at nighttime is usually a costly proposition; therefore, a more cost-effective approach is needed. After a number of bridge rail reflectors were evaluated, the Stimsonite 967 was found to be the best. One hundred of these markers were installed at a test site for further evaluation. In addition, 3M Stamark N360 pavement tape was laid down as one-half of the double barrier centreline across the bridge. After almost one year of monitoring, the results demonstrate successfully the use of the reflectors in delineating the bridge at night. A couple of minor problems occurred: about 15% of the markers were broken off by snowploughing, and frequent washing of the markers was required. The 3M pavement tape was brighter than paint, but its high cost was not justified because of poor durability. Up to 30% of the tape was lifted off or worn out. The marker delineation is recommended for future applications at other long narrow bridge sites, but the centreline tape is seen not to be cost-effective. (Author/TRRL )
