ACCIDENT CHARACTERISTICS OF ELDERLY PEDESTRIANS
Elderly pedestrians (age 60 and over) have a very high fatality rate compared to other age groups and are involved in a high percentage of accidents at intersections. In order to develop countermeasures to reduce this problem, the study has identified the accident characteristics of older pedestrians and determined their risk of accident involvement in terms of severity (probability of fatality). Results indicate that the provision of appropriate traffic control devices to reduce the interaction between left turning vehicles and pedestrians at intersections will reduce the accident involvement of older pedestrians. It was also found that there was a reduction in the accident involvement of older pedestrians. It was also found that there was a reduction in the accident involvement of older pedestrians in divided roads compared to undivided roads. Also, the provision of proper lighting during night might reduce the severity of older pedestrian accidents.
