SLAMMING PRESSURES ON A BARGE MODEL
The steadily increasing usage of very large barges in ocean transportation has revealed new problems which require immediate attention. In order to simplify construction, and utilize the available space for cargo, the bow of the barge is usually of a full, blunt form. As a consequence, it frequently sustains severe structural damage as it emerges in heavy seas and reenters the water with an impact. The purpose of the work reported here was to introduce a pilot study which could lay a foundation for a more extensive work, leading eventually to measurements on full size barges. The most severe limitation was the low frequency response of the pressure recording system, with the consequence that the measured pressures may be somewhat lower than those measured by a more complicated high frequency system. The results indicate obvious trends from which some conclusions can be drawn and more accurate experiments planned and outlined for the future.
