LEARNING AND INNOVATING IN A CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY LABORATORY. IN: PREPARING FOR CONSTRUCTION IN THE 21ST CENTURY, PROCEEDINGS OF CONSTRUCTION CONGRESS '91, SPONSORED BY THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CIVIL ENGINEERS IN COOPERATION WITH THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF MINING ENGINEERS AND THE AMERICAN ARBITRATION ASSOCIATION, CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS, APRIL 13-16, 1991
It has been recognized that the construction industry world wide, and especially in the U.S., needs innovative changes in order to produce more complex products at higher quality and at a lower cost. International competition in new construction technology is heating up. Education in construction engineering and management must facilitate the industry need for leaders with a good knowledge of existing technology and the technical competence to lead projects involving innovative methods, machines and products. Above all, education has to promote creative thinking which is based on a solid comprehension of fundamental principles in engineering and science. This paper discusses experiences gained in using a technology laboratory to foster learning through practice.
