RATIONAL FABRICATION SPECIFICATIONS FOR STEEL STRUCTURES - PROPOSAL FOR A NEW UNIFIED APPROACH . RATIONAL FABRICATION SPECIFICATIONS FOR STEEL STRUCTURES. PAPERS PRESENTED AT A SEMINAR HELD IN LONDON, JULY 13, 1988

This paper gives the background to and an outline of a new fitness-for-purpose based proposal whose adoption would allow a rationalisation of the current application based inspection and acceptance/rejection requirements for steel work structures. The first part of the paper covers the scope of the proposals presented at the seminar. It emerged that the proposals could be suitable for inclusion into an ISO code. As such this could provide a general design interface for various criteria presently under development in the United Kingdom such as the BCSA Building specification and the United Kingdom BS 5400: Part 6 for bridges (see IRRD 264409). An outline document is provided which is tabled in a format suitable for consideration as an ISO Code. It is proposed that this specification is in 3 parts: Part 1, the designers section - methods for calculating parameters used to define the requirements given in part 2, either for structures in part or in the whole; Part 2, The specification' - requirements set out under each chapter as a basic set of requirements and progressively more stringent requirements which are designer defined; and Part 3, guidance on statistical appraisal of results. This section would provide the method and criteria to be used when either: (a) the contractor wishes to reduce inspection during fabrication on the basis of a demonstration of high quality being achieved in any particular regard; or (b) the contractor is required to demonstrate high or very high quality achieved in any particular regard.
