CAPACITY OF TRANSIT LANES. HIGHWAY CAPACITY AND LEVEL OF SERVICE. PROCEEDINGS OF THE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON HIGHWAY CAPACITY, KARLSRUHE, GERMANY, 24-27 JULY 1991

In the last years several German cities converted their tramway lanes into transit lanes also used by buses. Up to now there is no certain knowledge about limit values of capacity on such transit lanes. These limit values can be derived from empirical relationships especially influenced by the waiting times at the stops. If the average waiting time at the stop exceeds the given medium following up period, which depends on different influences (e.g., number of boarding or alighting passengers, fare collection systems, regulation of traffic lights), traffic jams occur on transit lanes to be reduced only with difficulties. These hazards influence negatively punctuality and reliability of the public transport. Information is given through measured data from some German cities. From this background recommendations are deduced regarding the capacity of public transit lanes considering different marginal conditions. These comments are compared with according indications of the 1985 Highway Capacity Manual.
