TRAFFIC OPERATION ON 2-LANE ROADS IN HUNGARY AND THE NETHERLANDS. HIGHWAY CAPACITY AND LEVEL OF SERVICE. PROCEEDINGS OF THE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON HIGHWAY CAPACITY, KARLSRUHE, GERMANY, 24-27 JULY 1991
Traffic operation at a number of two-lane rural roads in Hungary and the Netherlands has been investigated using the same methods for collecting and analysing the data. The aim is to find which factors influence the quality of the traffic stream and to construct models for the relations found. In doing so the agreements and differences between the two countries are determined and a comparison with the well known American Highway Capacity Manual is made. The investigations concentrate on: The effects of volume and vehicle composition on mean speed and platooning; The distribution of free speeds; The mathematical distributions that fit characteristics such as headways; Two methods to estimate the capacity of the road and its results.
