The structures research area of the Strategic Highway Research Program is developing new ways of testing and rehabilitating reinforced concrete structures suffering from chloride induced corrosion due to deicing salt or sea salt attack. This paper reviews the work of the 6 main contracts and some subsidiary SHRP IDEA contracts. The main topics dealt with are non-destructive testing of reinforced concrete, cathodic protection, electrochemical chloride removal, cationic inhibitors, conventional rehabilitation techniques and the development of a methodology for rehabilitation of corrosion damaged structures.
