MODES AND CONSEQUENCES OF THE FAILURE OF ROAD AND RAIL TANKERS CARRYING LIQUEFIED GASES AND OTHER HAZARDOUS LIQUIDS . RELIABILITY ON THE MOVE: SAFETY AND RELIABILITY IN TRANSPORTATION. PROCEEDINGS OF THE SAFETY AND RELIABILITY SOCIETY SYMPOSIUM 1989, BATH, 11-12 OCTOBER 1989

The differing circumstances of the transport of hazardous liquids by road and rail tankers are described. The mechanical design considerations involved in the design of these vehicles is outlined. Causes of failure are listed as are the consequences of failure which are related to the geometry of the escape and the nature of the contents. Appendices provide a scenario which could lead to hydraulic rupture, a discussion of the behaviour of flashing liquids and a note on the acronym BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapour Explosion).
