This paper provides a background view of the implementation of the Rio de Janeiro Underground Rapid Transit Sistem - 'Metro' - with its implications in the structure of the transport system of the area and in its urban development. In this paper a brief description of demographic and economic characteristics of the area is given. Statistics are provided on the number of employees of the Rio de Janeiro Metro, and numbers of passengers transported daily. (TRRL)
