INTERNATIONAL PARTICIPATION IN LONG TERM PAVEMENT PERFORMANCE STUDIES. STRATEGIC HIGHWAY RESEARCH PROGRAM . THIRD INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON BEARING CAPACITY OF ROADS AND AIRFIELDS. PROCEEDINGS, NORWEGIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, TRONDHEIM, NORWAY, JULY 3-5 1990. VOLUMES 1-2

This paper discusses various aspects of international participation in the Long Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) studies of the USA's Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP). The basic LTPP experiments were formulated to represent conditions within North America. However, the essential factors are generally worldwide, so that the experiments should be of interest to many other countries. The simplest form of cooperation for participating countries is information exchange. Each country, desiring to participate more actively in the SHRP-LTPP studies, can select pavement sections to form its own experiment as a subsection of the LTPP experiments, and can collect inventory data and monitoring measurements in ways suitable for comparison with the LTPP data. The more closely a country's test sections and data collection activities match the US LTPP activities, the more both the country and the SHRP benefit. SHRP has established a national database and four regional databases in the USA; it has agreed to make a copy of its national database available to any participating country, and it has also formulated a data analysis and acquisition plan. The SHRP-LTPP research project will last for 20 years, aiming to produce early products in the first 5 years, intermediate products in the next 5 years, and long-term products in the last 10 years.
