DEVELOPMENT OF AN ANALYTICAL METHOD FOR ASSESSING THE BEARING CAPACITY OF ROADS AND AIRFIELDS . THIRD INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON BEARING CAPACITY OF ROADS AND AIRFIELDS. PROCEEDINGS, NORWEGIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, TRONDHEIM, NORWAY, JULY 3-5 1990. VOLUMES 1-2
A description is given of an analytical method that has been developed to estimate the elastic moduli of the main pavement structural layers (e.g. surfacing, base and subgrade) from a deflection bowl measured by the Deflectograph. This approach is based on a newly developed computer program 'DUAL' allowing analysis of a multilayered pavement using a simplified version of the elastic theory. The analytical model DUAL was further developed and incorporated in an iterative technique 'EPLOPT' which matches the calculated surface deflection bowl to that accurately measured by the Deflectograph resulting from known loading conditions. The backcalculated elastic moduli obtained from this matching are then adjusted for loading frequency, design temperature and season. Accurate layer thicknesses are required for the backanalysis and these are obtained by pavement testing using the Dynamic Cone Penetrometer at selected points. The adjusted moduli are used as input to the analytical model DUAL for further analysis allowing computation of the remaining life of the pavement based model on fatigue and deformation concepts. The final structural evaluation model 'EPLOPT' is capable of analysing a large number of deflection bowls at a fraction of the analysis cost associated with a finite element model. (Author/TRRL)
