SANDWICH ROAD STRUCTURE AND MATERIALS WITH HIGH LOAD CARRYING CAPACITY . THIRD INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON BEARING CAPACITY OF ROADS AND AIRFIELDS. PROCEEDINGS, NORWEGIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, TRONDHEIM, NORWAY, JULY 3-5 1990. VOLUMES 1-2
This paper presents the results of some Swiss laboratory and field tests of the bearing capacity of compacted crushed stone and crushed gravel subbases. When additionally compacted, crushed stone and crushed gravel, with approximately equal amounts of broken and rounded surfaces, were found to have a bearing capacity between two and three times the bearing capacity of rounded gravel. Therefore, well-compacted crushed stone or crushed gravel is comparable with cement-stabilised soil. This implies that these materials are used much below their potential, if they are compacted and used according to the AASHTO Interim Design Guidelines (1976). Four test sections, with different combinations of crushed materials, were incorporated in actual roads and tested under normal traffic; they were found to withstand heavy traffic and frost conditions well. It was found that crushed stone and crushed gravel had very similar values of bearing capacity; although crushed stone has better strength properties, these properties are compensated by the better workability of crushed gravel. In Switzerland, most main roads and airports have sandwich constructions where the subgrade is very bad. The results presented here show that it is admissible to design a sandwich structure as a beam or plate. (TRRL)
