ANALYSIS OF DEFLECTION DATA FROM TWO TEST SECTIONS AT THE PENN STATE TEST TRACK . THIRD INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON BEARING CAPACITY OF ROADS AND AIRFIELDS. PROCEEDINGS, NORWEGIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, TRONDHEIM, NORWAY, JULY 3-5 1990. VOLUMES 1-2
This article describes tests undertaken to evaluate the performance of various types of deflection measuring devices. These included geophones, single layer deflectometers (SLD's) and multidepth deflectometers. (MDD's). Two test sections were instrumented. Two 50 ft (15.2 m) pavement sections (one thick, one thin) were designed for the installation of the various transducers. After construction of the crushed aggregate subbase construction was suspended so that the geophones on top of the subgrade and subbase could be installed. The surface geophones SLD's and MDD's were retrofitted after construction. Various combinations of load, axle configuration, tyre pressure, and vehicle speed were tested. At least 4 replicate measurements were taken. Field testing usually began in the early morning and continued until mid morning to minimize temperature variation. The test vehicle was a single axle tractor and a tandem-axle semi trailer with conventional leaf spring suspension. Various analyses were performed on the measured data to evaluate the performance of the individual gauges using the following criteria: (a) survivability during both construction and traffic loading; (b) repeatability of the measurements; (c) effect of the test variables on the gauge measurements; and (d) reliability. It was found that geophones did not perform well under truck loading, but both SLD and MDD devices performed satisfactorily and exhibited good repeatability and reliability. Axle load was the predominant factor in pavement deflection, and the effect of tyre pressure was negligible. The measured deflection was smaller at higher speeds than for lower speeds. (TRRL)
