SAFETY AND OPERATION OF THE TRANS-EUROPEAN MOTORWAY TEM . PROCEEDINGS INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NEW WAYS AND MEANS FOR IMPROVED SAFETY, TEL AVIV, ISRAEL, FEBRUARY 20-23, 1989
The TEM (TRANS European Motorway) is the common project of ten countries to connect the baltic, eastern meditteranean and the Middle East with a 10.000 km. Long motorway network. The project is being implemented with the assistance of the UNDP Uunited Nations Development Programme) and the UN-ECE (United Nations -Economic Commission for Europe). In order to ensure up to date layout and operation of the TEM, standards, recommendations and studies are elaborated by the experts of the participating countries. The study on safety and operation has been undertaken by a Hungarian team. In a systematic approach, the following chapters have been included: standardization of accident data; uniform strategy for improving safety; traffic control; signalization, pavement marking, other devices, lighting, general issues of traffic operation, automatic traffic control; proposals for the future. Moreover, case studies describe the actual safety situation in the TEM countries, the analysis and prevention of accidents in Greece and the automatic traffic control on a Hungarian motorway. As the construction of the motorway takes a long time, the study deals with the problems of the non motorway sections as well. (Author/TRRL)
