READY OR NOT, THE COAL BOOM IS A-COMIN'

The development and growth of coal mining in the Powder River Basin will cause an increase in train traffic, carrying not only coal cargo but also supplies to the new power plant. Neighboring towns must deal also with growth in agribusiness, secondary coal mining industries and population. A new marginal route at Newcastle, currently under construction, will provide an overpass for motorists over the Burlington Northern Railroad and help alleviate some of the anitcipated transportation problems. The coal unit trains which may be a mile long and travel at 50 mph will also cause a noise impact on the towns they pass through. Firms that supply goods and services to coal industries will be a second source of impact. Population growth is also expected and additional housing will be needed. Mobile houses within the city limits will pose a problem. There is also the need to upgrade property values.
