ABOUT LNEC EXPERIENCE ON SCALE EFFECTS IN THE DEFORMABILITY OF ROCKS . PROCEEDINGS OF THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON SCALE EFFECTS IN ROCK MASSES, LOEN, NORWAY, JUNE 7-8 1990

In simple compression tests on three types of rocks 35600 determinations were carried out which have made it possible to develop the following conclusions: - The values of strains measured on each type of rock follow a normal distribution and thus the mean value of the corresponding deformability moduli is the harmonic mean. - The mean values of the deformability moduli of rock masses are independent of the test area and of the gauge length, these rock masses are assumed to be homegeneous and divided by a system which is assumed to be normal to the direction along which the force is applied, the intensity of jointing being constant. Corresponding standard deviations decrease as the gauge length augments, asymptotically tending to zero. - Safety against deformation increases with the foundation area, for structures that convey identical stresses to the same rock mass. Thus it will be possible to make savings in those works within the present safety criteria. (Author/TRRL)
