SCALE EFFECTS IN THE DETERMINATION OF THE DEFORMABILITY AND STRENGTH OF ROCK MASSES . PROCEEDINGS OF THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON SCALE EFFECTS IN ROCK MASSES, LOEN, NORWAY, JUNE 7-8 1990
Regarding scale effects in the determination of the stress-strain-behaviour and the strength of rock masses it is necessary to consider the following three terms used in structurology: The considered area, the smallest representative volume and the basic element. Attention must be paid to all these three parts if the characteristic properties of rock masses are to be described correctly. The paper distinguishes direct and indirect methods for the determination of the mechanical behaviour of rock masses and gives an introduction especially to the direct methods. Finally conclusions are listed for further research activities in this field. (Author/TRRL)
