FUEL CONSUMPTION AND SYSTEM COSTS RELATED TO LONGER COMBINATION VEHICLE OPERATION ON THE INTERSTATE NETWORK

There are currently several federal proposals being considered to allow various types and sizes of Longer Combination Vehicles (LCVs) to operate on the interstate network. Should any of the common LCVs, Rocky Mountain Doubles, Turnpike Doubles or Triple Trailers be given access to the interstate network, both fuel consumption (gallons) and system costs (defined as the cost to maintain the flexible and rigid pavements on the interstate network) would increase. These increases are attributed to an increase in truck vehicle-miles-of-travel (VMT) and 18-Kip equivalent single axle loads (ESALs) that would result from intramodal diversion, intermodal diversion, and new market growth.
