TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF COMPUTER-BASED SHIP AUTOMATION SYSTEMS
This paper deals with the technical aspects of computer- based integrated automation systems in the light of current developments in electronic components and computing techniques, in particular the increasing use of large-scale integrated circuits, micro-processors and distributed processor computers. The 'system approach' to design is emphasised with special reference to non-computing aspects such as data acquisition and transfer, sensors and interfaces and inter-action between the system and the user. The authors identify the need for a 'data highway' to facilitate the integration of sub-systems; the characteristics and advantages of a typical highway are discussed. In keeping with the philosophy discussed in earlier papers, the automation system is considered as a number of integrated modules covering bridge, machinery and deck operations. The computing requirements of each module are defined. Alternative ways of providing computing facilities are discussed with particular reference to reliability and integrity. A detailed description of a typical integrated system is given.
