SHIP AUTOMATION AND THE FUTURE - AN INTRODUCTORY PAPER

A brief account is given of the considerations which led to the promotion of the comprehensive feasibility study of the potential for computer-based ship automation, on which all the Symposium papers are based. The study was sponsored by the U.K. Government in association with the equipment manufacturing, shipowning and shipbuilding industries, and was carried out by a multi-disciplinary team, of which the authors of the papers were the principal members. A broad outline is given of present-day ship automation practice, concentrating on the most advanced level of automation now widely fitted in new ships, as representing the base-line from which further progress may be considered. Experience with this level of automation is shown to be generally satisfactory, although shipowners consider that a period of consolidation is required before further advances are introduced. Some comments are made on development goals, and reference is made to the differing, although not conflicting, interests of the various parties concerned. Finally, the objectives are summarised of the study on which the Symposium is based, and an outline is given of its scope and content in order to bring out the relationship between the papers which follow.
