SMALL-SCALE MAINTENANCE OF POROUS ASPHALT-CONCRETE

KLEIN ONDERHOUD VAN ZEER OPEN ASFALTBETON

The working group B13 "Maintenance of porous asphalt-concrete" of the Netherlands Centre for Research and Contract Standardization in Civil and Traffic Engineering (CROW) is doing research on appropriate techniques for small-scale maintenance of porous asphalt-concrete. Experience with such techniques has been gained by means of experimental projects in the Netherlands and Belgium. This article describes the techniques applied in these projects for the repair of cracks, holes, and fretting. When repairing reflected cracks it is important that the underlying construction is permanently sealed. To do this the porous asphalt-concrete around the cracks has to be removed. The various techniques that can be used in this form of repair can be divided into two categories. To repair holes hot prepared cold porous asphalt-concrete can be used. In this way the porous character of the pavement is maintained. The preparation of the cracks and holes that require sealing is very important. Minor fretting can be treated by putting on a fogseal. This means that a very thin binder film is put on the road surface. (TRRL)
