RUBBER ASPHALT DEMANDS MORE CERTAINTY: DESPITE POSITIVE INDICATIONS
RUBBERASFALT VRAAGT NOG MEER ZEKERHEDEN: ONDANKS POSITIEVE AANWIJZINGEN
To prolong the service life of porous asphalt concrete the bitumen can be modified with pulverized rubber. Despite positive indications little can be said for the time being on the definite application of this so-called rubber asphalt (or "poro-elastic asphalt concrete"), because there is still a lack of clarity about some aspects. After a short description of the present Dutch situation concerning porous asphalt concrete and rubber asphalt these two asphalt types are compared with each other on the basis of their service life, quality control, recycling and functional behaviour. Besides advantages such as noise reduction and prolongation of the service life, the recycling of old tyres in rubber asphalt can be a positive contribution to the re-use of old materials. More (practical) research will, however, be necessary to gain a better insight into the properties and the behaviour of rubber asphalt. (TRRL)
